Q: Are your herbs safe for my chickens?
A: Our human-grade herbs, bee pollen, and apple cider vinegar granules are 100% pure, USA raised and humanely harvested, and safe for chickens, ducks, geese, and quail.
We're big supporters of sustainable farming, and unlike other companies that sell herbs for backyard chickens, we're fully licensed to manufacture and distribute chicken feed.
Our products are developed using information in peer-reviewed studies, including studies published by the National Research Council Subcommittee on Poultry Nutrition and independently tested for quality - so you can be sure your hens are getting only the best of the best.
Q: Where do you source your ingredients?
A: Our ingredients are sourced in the United States, are 100% pure, and are non-GMO.
A: Our ingredients are sourced in the United States, are 100% pure, and are non-GMO.
Q: How long do the herbs last?
A: It depends! You'll want to use the herbs in accordance with the label, but typically, you'll want to use 1/4 cup of herbs in nesting boxes and around your coop 2 - 3 times weekly. A 5 ounce bag should last 10 days, while larger bags will last longer. The larger bags are also cost savers!
Q: How do I use the herbs?
A: Your hens can enjoy their herbs in their nesting boxes or feed (they'll try to eat them either way!). Each batch is tested for quality using independent labs, and guaranteed by us.
Q: Help! My hens aren't eating their herbs! What do I do?
A: Sometimes if chickens aren't familiar with a treat, they're not sure it's food. Customers have had success mixing their herbs with their flock's favorite treat, with dried shrimp or black soldier fly larvae, or even opening a gourd and combining the herbs with it. You can also mix the herbs with water, and allow your hens to get herbal benefits from their drinking water.
Q: How do I use the treats?
A: You can feed the treats separately or incorporate into a high quality layer feed. Please note that our treats aren't meant to replace your flock's layer feed - they're treats to spoil your hens! Our treats are tested for quality using independent labs, and guaranteed by us.
Q: What's your shipping policy?
A: We ship most items for free to addresses in the United States. Packages are shipped Monday - Friday by either United States Postal Service or UPS. Due to post office limitations, products ordered on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays will ship the following week. We strive to ship all orders within 24 hours, however, in some cases, it might take up to 72 hours. Please read our shipping policy here.
Please note that if you use a PO box, it can take up to 5 days for your items to ship due to post office limitations. For the fastest shipping, please use a street address.
Q: Help! My item was damaged during shipment!
A: Although this doesn't happen often, sometimes the US Postal Service is a bit rougher than we like. If your item was damaged during shipment, please reach out to us. We're happy to replace your item 100% free of charge after we receive photos of the damaged item. Our goal is to make sure your hens are 100% satisfied!
Q: Why is my product on back order/hasn't shipped yet?
A: Our products are very popular, and occasionally go on back order. To ensure maximum freshness, we replenish our herbs on a weekly basis. This is a good thing - you can be sure your herbs are as fresh as possible!
We strive for back ordered products to be stocked within 7 business days. If your order hasn't shipped or is on back order, please check with us at editor@thefrugalchicken.com to find out an expected ship date. If you were notified your product is on back order, you can expect it to ship close to on the date listed on your notification.
Q: It's been a while and my order still hasn't shown up. What can I do?
A: When your item shipped, you might have received a tracking number in your shipping confirmation. Please check the tracking number with either USPS or UPS to determine whether the package has left our warehouse. Please use the tracking information to determine an expected delivery date for your items. If your package hasn't shipped, please contact us at editor@thefrugalchicken.com for an update.
Q: Do you ship internationally?
A: Yes! We have successfully shipped to Canada, Australia, and the UK. We ship international packages USPS First Class, which comes with a tracking number for your package so we can track its journey. Please note that international shipping isn't covered under our free shipping policy. If you aren't sure if a package from us will make it past customs, then you can try ordering our products on Amazon right here.
Do you have other options to buy your products?
A: Yes! You can check out our store on Amazon right here. Our products are available on Amazon Prime, which includes free 2 day shipping. We're always adding new products from the Living The Good Life With Backyard Chickens store to Amazon, so if you don't see your favorite product available there, you can buy it in this store, or check back with Amazon at a later date.
Q: Can I return the product?
A: For paperback books, herbs, and soap, our return policy is 14 days as long as the product hasn't been used and it's not part of a subscription (for subscription items, see below). To be eligible for a return, your item must be unused and in the same condition that you received it. It must also be in the original packaging.
Several types of goods are exempt from being returned. Perishable goods such as food, flowers, newspapers or magazines cannot be returned. We also do not accept products that are intimate or sanitary goods, hazardous materials, or flammable liquids or gases.
Additional non-returnable items:

Because of the nature of digital products, we do not offer refunds on those purchases except in instances of accidental duplicate purchases. If you are very dissatisfied with your digital purchase or experience difficulty downloading your purchase, please reach out to us and we will do everything we can to rectify your dissatisfaction. Thank you!
To complete your return, we require a receipt or proof of purchase.
Q: Can I ask for a refund?
A: Once your return is received and inspected, we will send you an email to notify you that we have received your returned item. We will also notify you of the approval or rejection of your refund. If you are approved, then your refund will be processed, and a credit will automatically be applied to your credit card or original method of payment, within a certain amount of days. For subscription items, including herbs and dried insects, you have 24 hours after your card is charged to ask for a refund. After the 24 hour period, we are unable to process a refund unless you receive the product and it's damaged. Please contact us with any questions.
Q: My refund is late or missing, what should I do?
A: If you haven’t received a refund yet, first check your bank account again. Then contact your credit card company, it may take some time before your refund is officially posted. Next contact your bank. There is often some processing time before a refund is posted. If you’ve done all of this and you still have not received your refund yet, please contact us at editor@thefrugalchicken.com.
